For more than 40 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas has been pairing children, ages 6-16 with supportive adult mentors who build friendships and offer encouragement and support to each child. Our one-to-one mentoring model helps kids facing adversity achieve measurable outcomes leading to lifelong success. In 2011 alone, our volunteers provided 90,000 hours of mentoring to 1,500 children in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. The value of that time is nearly $2 million! Even more impressively, last year more than 97 percent of the children we served stayed in school, improved their grades and avoided early parenting. We also are proud to boast that in 2011, we supported more than 70 students who benefited from our scholarship program and awarded more than $45,000 in scholarship funds. The Central Texas agency is ranked in the top 5 percent in the nation for program quality (out of 360 BBBS agencies), and last year, our agency was one of only 18 honorees nationwide that was named a Gold Standard Award agency for sustained pace-setting performance in quality growth. BBBS is a donor-supported mentoring organization. Your investment, whether it be $25, $100, $1,000 or more, provides a safer community, better prepared workforce and more responsible, productive citizens achieving lifelong success. Compared to the alternative -- $99,000 per year to incarcerate one child in a Texas Youth Commission facility -- our program is a great investment with an excellent return.

When homelessness cannot be avoided, FFH provides meals, shelter and caring presence for families with children by enlisting the help of committed volunteers and the use of congregational facilities. Shelter families utilize FFH’s Day Resource Center, transportation, comprehensive case management, life skills classes and access to child care, job counseling, training, and subsidized housing to attain their goals of self-sufficiency. FFH also offers warm breakfasts, hygiene items, services and caring presence to 400 adults twice weekly through Feed My People at First United Methodist Church. More than 3000 volunteers work with FFH each year, giving 50,000 hours of service. While the value of direct financial assistance, donated facilities, goods and services provided through FFH easily exceeds $2M annually, the deeper value of our work is in building a more caring and sustainable community. Leibel B. Harelik started PCRC in July of 2002 after his experience with a terminal diagnosis of the disease. After going to six doctors and a major cancer hospital, there was still no treatment and no cure. He was told “come back when it gets worse” and that “since you are a younger man, it will strike you harder and faster”. He found no local organizations that provided support for this type of cancer. His feeling of hopelessness from the diagnosis was only compounded by a side effect of the palliative care medication that resulted in even deeper depression. There was no one to provide hope and guidance at this critical time. Thanks to innovative treatment and a positive attitude, Mr. Harelik is now cancer free. As a result of these experiences, his goal is to make sure that every man find the best treatment available and that no man goes through this experience alone ever again.
In addition to the usual early detection and care assistance, PCRC provides survivorship support. Clients are encouraged to look past the “medical cursing” of pessimistic diagnoses and are on-going support with diet, exercise, and alternative treatment. Combined with encouragement for the client’s personal, spiritual beliefs, the diagnosed man is given the help and the hope that is needed to face the rest of their lives as prostate cancer survivors.
